Water quality describes the condition of the water, including chemical, physical and biological characteristics, usually with respect to its suitability for a particular purpose such as drinking, etc. Water and Sanitation Support Organisation (WSSO), under the Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance Programme (WQM&SP) helps in setting up and upgradation of district and Sub Divisional water quality testing labs, supply of field test kits and refill and training to grass root level workers for water quality tests. The Uniform Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Protocol is referred for guidance. The monitoring and surveillance results from the habitations are put on the database of the Ministry (IMIS, NRDWP) and thus monitored to ensure drinking water security at the household level.
Public Health Engineering Department, Assam has a wide network of water testing laboratories spread all over Assam. Moreover, Mobile Water Testing Laboratories are mobilized to test water samples in remote and sensitive locations.
